The pre-damaged condition shows the artist's insignia at the centre left: winged serpent with elevated wings, facing right and dated '1528' [cda 2013]
Description:
Description of the painting before damage: Martin Luther's beefy face is depicted against a bluish-green background. The black robe and beret emphazise the almost calligraphic rendition of the great Reformer's face, which nevertheless exhibits a painterly quality in the delicate flesh paint. [Bendel 1944, 18]
