Research History / Discussion

This painting is presumably after the portrait of Geiler (woodcut) on the title page of 'Doctor Keiserbergs Postill', Strasbourg 1522.

[Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, 130, No. 310]

Werner Schade convincing identified the sitter as Rudolph Agricola. His thesis is based on a portrait series from 1532 in the register book of the University of Wittenberg, which is attributed to Lucas Cranach and shows the 'Father of northern Humanism' as a portrait medaillon alongside Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon and Erasmus of Rotterdam.
