The Holy Cross appears to Emperor Constantine in the clouds. In the foreground on the right a knight in armour has sunk to the ground after being pierced in the throat with a long sword by another knight in armour. On the right the emperor is surrounded by noble people and knights. There is a river landscape in the background.

Emperor Heraclius, dressed this time in grey penitential robes, bare-headed and barefoot approaches the now open gates with the Holy Cross. In the background there is a castle on a high outcrop.

The Virgin as Mother of Sorrows is shown as a full-length figure against a black background and standing on stony ground. The Virgin is turned to the left. She wears a blue robe, her head and shoulders are covered by a yellowish veil. She wipes the tears from her face with the veil in her left hand.
