Technical studies

2018Technical examination / Scientific analysis

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

- fir

- cropped at the bottom. Three vertically aligned and butt-joined planks. Plank I: 24.5 cm; plank II: 15 cm; plank III: 9.3-10.8 cm

- marks from a saw visible on the reverse

- Dendrochronology: the following annual rings were measured: plank I: no measurements obtained; plank II: 55 annual rings1503-1449; plank III: 31 annual 1469-1439. The youngest annual ring is dated 1503. Generally with fir the whole section is used and only the bark is removed. We can therefore assume that the tree was not felled before 1503. This was followed by a two year period in which the wood was seasoned before it could be used as a painting support. [Klein 2016]

Ground and Imprimatura

Support:

  • cropped at the bottom

  • the panel exhibits a convex warp

  • vertical cradle members, pine, the horizontal members were removed in 1985, causing vertical splitting in the panel. Later stabilised with 5 balsa wood blocks, 1 pine wood block and 1 beech wood block positioned varioiusly on the joins.

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably repeatedly applied with a brush. Only a few relatively new retouches could be identified under UV light because of the strong fluorescence of this layer.
