- beech wood; two vertically aligned planks. Plank widths (verso from the right): plank I: 27.5 cm; plank II: 31 cm; chamfered on all four sides: 1.3 cm broad, 0.7 cm high

- Dendrochronology: the following measurements were recorded: plank I: 50 annual rings, dating was not possible; plank II: 149 annual rings, 1517-1344. The youngest annual ring is dated 1517. Generally with beech wood the entire section is used and only the bark is removed, therefore a felling date of 1517 can be estimated. The wood was then seasoned for a further two years before use.

Identification of wood species: beech wood

Support:

• the reverse of the panel was thinned to reveal open woodworm channels; the brittle or rotten wood of the panel was consolidated by wax impregnation; the surface was stained reddish brown.

Ground and paint layers:

• losses in the ground layer, particularly along the bottom edge; only retouched and not filled; some areas of tenting with drying cracks in the paint layers, these are however stable.

Varnish:

• the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer restricts the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones.
