Research History / Discussion

The sitter was identified by Schade on the basis of similarities with a portrait from 1520 of Count Philipp by Cranach's pupil Hans Döring[PRIVATE_NONE-P110].

[Koepplin, Exhib. Cat. Basel 1974, No. 609]

It was at the court in Wittenberg] that Philipp first encountered Cranach [...] and he probably also met Hans Döring here, who was at the time employed in Cranach's workshop and who later became Philipp's court painter. Two portraits from 1520 of the the count by Döring (Schloss Laubach and [PRIVATE_NONE-P110]) appear to also draw on the study in Bautzen like the features of St Sebastian on the right wing of the triptychon from the same year [DE_BSE_NONE-001], which was executed in the Cranach workshop for Gabriel von Eyb, the bishop of Eichstatt (1455-1535).
