The first couple is shown against a dark background with the tree of knowledge between them. In the tree the serpent turns towards Eve. She holds the apple in her raised right hand and looks at Adam, who points towards her with a questioning gesture.

Research History / Discussion

The realistic depiction of a human couple was something completely new at the beginning of the 16th century. The heritage of gothic idealised forms is therefore still perceptible in the pose and contours of the figures.
