Description:
The panel by an anonymous painter shows Luther in three-quarter profile and facing left, wearing the black frock of the Augustinian order. The book and the slightly raised left hand distinguish him as a theological minister or teacher. [Cat. Kassel 1997, 103]
Provenance:
- according to the entry in the inventory of 1749 the panel was already the property of the landgrave about 1750 and must have been acquired at the latest at the time of Wilhelms Vlll.
