Unlike the crosses of the thieves, which extend diagonally into the pictorial space, Christ's cross is arranged frontally facing the viewer. On the left beneath the crosses a group with St John and the Marys has gathered. Mary Magdalene embraces the shaft in mourning. A henchman behind her sticks his tongue out as he guides the sponge with vinegar upwards. The group of soldiers and dignitaries on the right includes a little boy, whose hand is held by one of the soldiers.
