The painting shows Christ gently touching the arm of the adulteress. She has her arms folded and looks at Christ. A group of men have gathered around them. An architectural setting is indicated in the background, while in the foreground a parapet with an inscription and two family coats of arms (Wigerinck at the left and Kerckring at the right) separates the viewer from the event. The event is given a contemporary context by including public personalities such as the donor Johann Wigerinck shown at the left, looking over Christ's shoulder. The reformer Johannes Bugenhagen is positioned at the right, wearing a bishop's mitre looking directly at the viewer.
