Recto:

St Mary Salome and Zebedeaus (with the features of Johannes the Steadfast) as well as her sons James and John are depicted on the front of the right wing.

The interior shown on the central panel is continued on the right wing and ends with an exterior wall with window niches.

Recto:

St Mary Salome and Zebedeaus (with the features of Johannes the Steadfast) as well as her sons James and John are depicted on the front of the right wing.

The interior shown on the central panel is continued on the right wing and ends with an exterior wall with window niches. St Mary Salome sits in the foreground on an unidentifiable seat. She is inclined to the left and wears a gold brocade dress with a wine red lining and a white bonnet. A boy in a transparent shirt stands between her knees. With crossed legs he bends himself down to his mother's lap and supports his hands on her thighs. St Mary Salome holds him with the left hand on the forehead, and combs his hair with her right hand. A second, unclothed child wraps himself in the folds of the wide dress of his mother and looks up to her.

The projection of the window niche serves Zebedeaus as a bench. With his legs crossed he studies a large tome, which he holds in both hands and additionally supports on his lap. He wears a sleeveless tunic in blue, gold and red. Beneath this he wears a shirt with wide, pink sleeves and red leggings. He has a beret on his head.

Verso:

St Anna is depicted on the reverse in grisaille. She stands in an arched niche and is inclined slightly to the left. Her left leg is positioned further back and she holds an open book in her hands at hip level. Her head is tilted and she looks down at the book. Anna wears a long robe with wide funnel sleeves and a pleated collar, and a bonnet that extends over her shoulders. Her halo consists of a solid disk, which emphasizes the sculptural quality.

Underdrawing

A freehand underdrawing executed with a brush is visible in the infrared reflectogram:

- on the recto it is visible in the children and is very detailed in St Mary Salome’s face; deviations from the underdrawing are visible in the nose and the right eye, whereas the folds on the lining of the sleeve have been roughly adhered to

- on the verso the brushstrokes are broader and more summary than on the recto, the folds are only roughly indicated and there are some deviations here: for example on the spine of the book and Anna’s finger tips, which rest on the cover were moved slightly

Paint Layers and Gilding

- the edge of the painted surface is covered with a black band of paint on both sides

- the haloes were executed in gold leaf
