Provenance

In 1578 Archduke Ferdinand II. of Tirol asked Elector August of Saxony for two portrait pairs depicting the electors Moritz and Johann Friedrich of Saxony for his portrait collection. The aforementioned should each be painted once in armour and once in everyday attire. Elector August commissioned Cranach the Younger, who delivered them within the same year. However for some unknown reason both portrait pairs remained in Saxony.
