The painting shows a half-length portrait of Johann Friedrich against a green background, facing right. The elector wears a fur-trimmed cloak and an embellished black gown over a white pleated shirt. His short brown hair is concealed under a beret decorated with feathers.

- initial design executed using a dry drawing material, this was then reinforced using a fluid, black medium and brush

Type/Ductus:

- traced or copied underdrawing

- the lines are employed with economy and are relatively thin to somewhat broader in character

Function:

- binding for the final painted version; lines delineate the main contours and describe essential details and facial features; no representation of volume with hatching strokes

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forms during the painting process
