The sitter is wearing a black garment under a gown of the same colour, a red stripe and a white collar are visible at the neckline. He has short grey hair and holds a book in his hands. This composition is based on a gray-haired depiction of Luther that Lucas Cranach the Elder first produced in the late 1530s.
