Conservation History

Date1997

At that treating the varnish was removed with ethanol, this also removed many of the old retouches. The original wooden panel support was thinned down to 2mm and transferred onto a 8.5 mm thick plywood panel. The glue which is used is visible on the edges. At the treatment in 1997 the glue was removed with distilled water and is scraped mechanically from the edges so that more of the original wood could be visible. In some places the paint had sunk into the worm holes and in other places the paint seems to have been pushed up by worms . As a result a number of very small paint losses in the black scattered all over. A very thin layer of Paralloid B72 was applied to isolate the fillings and the paint.
