Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush

Type/Ductus:

- relatively economical underdrawing

- thin to somewhat broader lines, at times very long

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate the main contours and describe essential details and facial features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forms during the painting process; small changes (e. g. the neck chain continues under the hair)

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- senior apprentice, (Simon Franck?); formerly known as: Master of the Mass of St Gregory, Master of the Pflock Altarpiece

Comments:

- probably after a pre-existing design

  • photographed by Ingo Sandner

Support

- the support consists of four planks, vertically aligned, widths (as seen from the verso from left to right): 10; 13.3; 15.5; 21 cm

- probably lime wood

- bad quality of wood, numerous wooden inserts
