The half-length composition shows Salome with the head of St John the Baptist on a silver plate against a dark background. She wears a dark red robe with numerous decorative slits and filigrain embroidery along the hem. Her attire is complemented by a neckband decorated with pearls and precious stones

The half-length composition shows Salome with the head of St John the Baptist on a silver plate against a dark background. She wears a dark red robe with numerous decorative slits and filigrain embroidery along the hem. Her attire is complemented by a neckband decorated with pearls and precious stones and a chain wrapped twice around her neck. However her most striking accessory is the bridal crown placed on top of her pinned up hair.

Research History / Discussion

Although Fenyö already specifically pointed out the painting's quality in 1954 and advocated its reevaluation it remained practically unknown. It was disregarded in favour of a more opulent Salome with a view of a landscape, also in the collection of the museum in Budapest. [...]

According to medieval legends Salome secretly loved St John the Baptist. The young princess' bridal crown perhap indicates the validity of such interpretations.
