Christ has fallen while carrying the cross on his shoulder. He looks at both the viewer and at Simon of Cyrene who has hurried to assist him. Further behind the Virgin and St John are represented as well as two soldiers armed with clubs.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- fluid black pigmented medium; executed with a pointed brush (?) and quill (?)

Type/Ductus:

- detailed and freehand underdrawing

- thin to broad, sketchy lines of varying length

Function:

- only roughly binding for the final painted version; lines define form and delineate contours, roughly indicating folds in the drapery; there is little representation of volume

Deviations:

- numerous minor alterations in the painted version to clearly define form
