Shown from the front Christ returns the viewer's gaze; clearly visible are the rod and whip in his hands, the crown of thorns, the stigmata and the open wound on his side, all of which refer to the agony he suffered to redeem the world.

Technical studies

  • Stereomicroscopy

Support

- a wooden panel consisting of 3 planks. Hardwood, possibly beech

- front from left to right: top 23.7 x 10.4 x 0.7 cm

bottom 21.6 x 12.4 x 1.0 cm

- a rebate 3.5 – 6 mm in depth runs along all four edges on the reverse

- the reverse is completely covered with an application of fine cloth (canvas)

Ground and Imprimatura

- a thin chalk ground covers an application of tow. In addition there is probably a layer of fine cloth (which has caused the blistering?)

- on the left and right sides the ground extends to the edge of the panel, at the top and the bottom it cannot be established where it ends. A narrow barbe is visible in raking light

Underdrawing

Infrared reflectography carried out by Dr. Ingo Sandner and Dr. Gunnar Heydenreich in October 2009

- a greyish underdrawing is partially apparent (eyes, bridge of the nose, top lip)

Paint Layers and Gilding

- thin, at times translucent

- the bundle of rods was painted wet-in-wet; compare with the panel in Vienna, where an almost identical process was employed for the rods.

Framing

- new, probably from the 1930s

- black frame
