Christ's corpse has been laid on a white cloth. St John crouches at the left edge of the painting and supports the torso. Mary Magdalene, wearing a red robe like St John, kneels in the centre and kisses Christ's left hand. The oinment jar is at her feet. Behind her are four women wearing white veils and crying, the first one and the one closest to Christ is the Virgin, who is about to dry her tears. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are on the right, one wears a red hood and holds the crown of thorns, while the other grasps the tip of the shroud. In the background the shafts of the three crosses are visible. The feet of the two thieves are visible on the crosses to the left and right.
