The fragment depicts a full-length figure of Cupid as a winged, nude child standing precariously on a pedestal. His left leg is bent, the left arm is stretched upwards and he stands on the pedestal only supported by the right leg. In his right hand Cupid holds an arrow of which only the fletching is visible. The pale flesh paint is in stark contrast to the black background.

Provenance

  • transferred in 1890 from the collection of the Archduke. Formerly in the collection of the Margrave of Baden. In the castle of Rastatt (Inventory from 1772, fol. 200 v. mentions: "Gemähld auf Holz, worauf ein nacketes geflügeltes Kindlein, auf einem Vierecketen Stein. Von Albrecht Dürer." (a painting on wood, showing a winged, nude child on a stone cube. By Albrecht Dürer.))
    [Kircher 1949, 531][1]
    [Kircher 1955, 222, 228][1]
It may be identical with No. 810.

  • the present panel corresponds more closely to the description of a painting in the inventory of the Margrave of Hofes from Basel, 1736 and 1773, No. 631: "Eine Nackendte Venus abermahls, auf einem felßigten Boden in Lebensgröße stehend, an der rechten Hand mit einem Braßelete geziert; neben welcher ein Cupido auf einem steinernen Cubo mit einem Fuß stehendt" (A nude Venus on stony ground, standing life-size, decorated with a bracelet on her right hand; beside her a Cupid standing with one foot on a stone cube). According to a notation in the inventory of 1799 this work was transferred to Karlsruhe and may later have been fragmented there.
