Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools / Materials:

- fluid grey/black medium, brush

Type/Ductus:

- detailed and freehand underdrawing

- fine and broader lines, long and unbroken in combination with some shorter strokes; some hatching-strokes

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate contours, define shapes and features; some representation of volume (with hatching strokes)

Deviations:

- minor alterations made during the painted version to clearly define form

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- the underdrawing was executed by an independent workshop member, either while he was still in the workshop or after (Meister IW?, Hans Kemmer?)

Comments:

- probably with reference to a preparatory drawing

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • fixed in a broad grooved frame (1962)

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer restricts the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones.

Conservation History

Date1962

Restoration
