The Virgin holds the infant Christ, who sits on the altar, while turning to Simeon the old man on the left. He is wearing priest's vestments. Incense is being burned in front of the altarpiece. A number of other people bear witness to the event, among them a young woman

The Virgin holds the infant Christ, who sits on the altar, while turning to Simeon the old man on the left. He is wearing priest's vestments. Incense is being burned in front of the altarpiece. A number of other people bear witness to the event, among them a young woman behind the Virgin, who is carrying two doves that will be sacrificed for Jesus in the temple.

Drawing material:

Technique:

- the lines of the underdrawing are thin and appear to have been executed in a dry material (chalk), particularly in the female figure on the right and the hands holding the incense burner; the painted version does not adhere strictly to the shapes, which are only roughly indicated as interrelated forms, particularly in the sleeves and apron of the woman holding the child, in the outline of her forehead and the contours of her neck; minor deviations between the underdrawing and the painted version are visible in the faces of the two women on the right and the hands holding the doves [1]
