Description:
The Virgin sits beneath an apple tree. She supports the Christ Child with her hands. He stands upright on her lap and has turned to the left to exchange an apple with the young St John, who is dressed in fur. The Virgin has long thick hair and is clothed in the colours blue, red and green. The inclination of her head reveals her interest in the children's activity. She looks out at the viewer. A rocky outcrop with the silhouette of a castle is visible in the top left corner. [Görres, cda 2012]
Provenance:
- from the collection of the Margrave of Baden, presumably the collection of the Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden from the inheritance of the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg in the castle of Theusing in Bohemia; in the inventory of 1691 as No. 12: "1 Marien bild mit dem kindl auf holz von Lucas Granich" (Virgin and Child on wood by Lucas Granich)
