Provenance

  • acquired in 1906. According to Frederik Peter Grünewald's travel diary the painting was bought at the auction of Baron Königswarter's collection on the 22nd November 1906. A letter from Johannes Hage from the 23rd November states: Ferdinandus Matthiolus, who in 1626 gave the painting to Madonna of Loreto, accompanied his master, the Elector Frederik, on travels and during his imprisonment in Tyrol. His son is supposedly a doctor and the painting remains until 1906 in this family in Eisenach. From an inscription on the verso it appears that the painting was already owned by the Saxon imperial ruler in 1626.
