The painting depicts the Virgin Mary and Joseph kneeling beside the crib within a walled stable. They kneel beside a crib containing the naked infant Christ, surrounded by numerous angels. More angels frolic in the clouds above. At the left edge of the painting the amazed shepherds appear, while at the right edge an opening in the wall reveals a landscape, showing a small representation of the annunciation to the shepherds in the distance.

  • 1939 taken by the Germans to a cenral collecting point ('Generaltreuhandstelle') in Berlin
  • 1942 donated by the general trustees ('Generaltreuhänder') in Berlin to the Kaiser Friedrich-Museum in Posen
  • 1943 evacuated to the repository in Kalau (Kalawa) near Merseritz (Miedzyrzecz) and in 1944 to Saxony
  • 1945 confiscated by the USSR
  • 1946 transferred from Moscow to Posen (Poznan).
