Research History / Discussion

'Based on the photographic reproduction the present painting appears to be a very remarkable work by Lucas Cranach that draws on an italian prototype.

Max J. Friedländer, Berlin, d. 19. IX.29'

Another version of this painting was auctioned in 2009 at the Dorotheum in Vienna. Here the provenance of these almost identical versions were confounded. A composition with three figures by a 16th century artist from the Bergamo school, illustrating a very similar female figure and attributed to Bartolomeo Veneto in Sotheby’s auction catalogue, London 20.05.1993, lot 12 was associated with the Viennese version. Dr. Klaus Grimm believes the painting to be ‚ohne Zweifel aus der Cranach-Werkstatt‘ (without doubt from Cranach’s workshop). Dr. Werner Schade and Ludwig Meyer on the other hand consider it to be the work of a northern Italian master.
