St Jerome is depicted sitting at a makeshift desk in a forest clearing, where he writes in an open book. There is also a crucifix beside him on the table and athough his status is betrayed by the cardinal's vestments, he is shown with a naked torso. His grey beard hangs down in long swathes. In the background at the right a caravan of pack animals is shown arriving at a cloister on the banks of a river, while on the left St Jerome's self-chastisement before the cross is visible. A lion lies behind a tree on the left side of the image. A double coat of arms hangs from the branches of the tree.
