Positioned to the left of the composition Christ kneels on a circular rocky plateau in the garden of Gethsemane awaiting the agony of the Passion. Full of fear he looks up to an angel who descends, bearing the chalice Jesus refers to in Matthew 26, 42 when he asked his father to let it pass him by. The sleeping apostles occupy the foreground on the right hand side, while in the background the soldiers led by Judas - wearing a yellow robe - can be seen entering the garden through the gate.
