The painting shows a half-length portrait of Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous against a light, neutral background, facing to his left. The elector is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak over a black tunic and has removed his beret, which he holds in front of him, together with a pair of gloves bearing intials. The scar from the wound he received in battle is clearly visible on his left cheek and four thick chains adorn his neck.
