The Man of Sorrows is the symbolic fusion of the suffering and risen Christ, which is depicted here by Lucas Cranach with impressive naturalism. [...] The panel shows the half-length figure of a forgiving Christ, standing against a dark background. His hands are folded in front of his body, directing the viewer's attention towards the deep wound in his side and his badly injured left hand. His upper body is marked with blood and sweat. Jesus presses the instruments of the passion against his body with his lower right arm. The addition of the childlike angel with red and green wings is an unusual variation of this subject.
