Christ has collapsed under the weight of the cross and supports himself with his right hand on a stone, while he is pulled onwards with a rope by a henchman. Christ looks back to the group with the Virgin and St John, that has been hustled to the left edge

Christ has collapsed under the weight of the cross and supports himself with his right hand on a stone, while he is pulled onwards with a rope by a henchman. Christ looks back to the group with the Virgin and St John, that has been hustled to the left edge of the painting by further henchmen. A group of men on horseback accompanies the procession. In the distant background the crosses are already being erected on the hill of Golgotha.
