Research History / Discussion

The altarpiece, which was consecrated in 1584, consists of columns bearing a triangular pediment and wing panels. When open, it shows nine images with scenes from the Life of Christ, and six saints are depicted on the inner sides of the wing panels. The exteriors of the wing panels and the reverse of the shrine show representations of Sts Kunigunde, Wolfgang, Andrew and Peter and were executed by Lucas Cranach (about 1520).

[Kloster Thurnfeld online, accessed 17.11.2020]

The wing panels in Thurnfeld Abbey and two other panels [DE_KHMM_G278] and [DE_KHMM_G277] were probably originally part of a larger retable.
