The painting depicts a half-length portrait of a man against a grey ground, in three-quarter profile facing right. His right hand grasps the fur collar of his black coat beneath which his white shirt peeps out. He looks out at the viewer with a slight squint. His long brown beard is split beneath the chin, while his brown hair is covered with a black hat. Represented in the top right corner is the sitter's coat-of-arms, which is repeated on his signet ring.
