The artist uses half-length figures against a dark background to depict this scene from St John's Gospel (8, 1-11). Christ is shown standing at the centre of the image wearing a cloak over his robe. His right hand is raised. The adulteress stands to his left with her head bowed

The artist uses half-length figures against a dark background to depict this scene from St John's Gospel (8, 1-11). Christ is shown standing at the centre of the image wearing a cloak over his robe. His right hand is raised. The adulteress stands to his left with her head bowed and gazes down. Christ has clasped her right hand in his left one. She is wearing a courtly dress with gold brocade. On the left side of the painting a group of men have gathered. The one in the foreground holds a bag of stones and the bearded man beside him clutches one at the ready in his left hand, while pointing at the adulteress with his right hand. Another group of men can be seen in conversation on the righthand side.

Research History / Discussion
