The painting depicts a toothless old man holding a young girl in his arms. He is oblivious to the fact that she attempts to steal his purse. The young woman, who is shown looking at the viewer, wears a red dress and precious jewellery.

'The 'Ill-matched Pair' or 'Disparate Love' was one of the most popular profane subjects of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age. The motif is associated with the themes of the 'Weibermacht', and gives visual expression to the corruptibility of man through female beauty with a moralizing intent .'
