St Bernhard, St Ursula [recto]

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush; an initial design was applied with a diluted medium; incised line are occasionally visible in the ground.

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing (presumably after a pre-existing design)

- thin to somewhat broader lines

- hatching-strokes, particularly in the faces

- incised lines are in visible the ground in St Bernhard's head and where they delimit gilded areas.

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the main contours, and describe essential details as well as facial features; representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forma during the painting process; small changes for example in the faces and the feet etc.
