- detailed and freehand underdrawing

- thin lines; isolated hatching-strokes

Function:

- binding for the final painted version; lines delineate main contours and define facial features; isolated representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Deviations:

- hardly any alterations made during the painting process to clearly define forms; no changes

  • the panel has been laminated and is now 1 cm thick (original panel is c. 0.4 cm thick)
  • examined by Gunnar Heydenreich

  • generally darkened

  • the craquellée is very prominent above all in the flesh paint

  • at the centre and the right some fine old cracks of varying lengths (closed and retouched)

  • some old retouches are visible - in part without fills, e.g. at the left edge

  • woodworm damage on the front and reverse of the frame
