- economic freehand underdrawing

- thin lines; no hatching-strokes

Function:

- binding for the final painted version; lines delineate the main contours and define the facial features; no representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Abweichungen:

- minor alterations made during the painting process to clearly define forms; no changes

  • the panel has been laminated and is now 1 cm thick (original panel is c. 0.4 cm thick)
  • examined by Gunnar Heydenreich

  • generally darkened

  • craquellée and fine cracking in the paint layers, particularly visible in the flesh paint

  • old retouches visible, e. g. on the forehead (retouched woodworm damage), in the background on both sides, on the robe at the bottom right.

  • more recent open exitholes in the fur trimming of the robe

  • woodworm damage in the frame on the front and the reverse
