The small picture, showing a family consisting of a married couple and five children - one son and four daughters - kneeling in an enclosed space, is part of an epitaph for Bartholomäus Vogel the Elder and his second wife, Barbara, nee. Stele. The Epitaph originally had numerous component parts.

The small picture, showing a family consisting of a married couple and five children - one son and four daughters - kneeling in an enclosed space, is part of an epitaph for Bartholomäus Vogel the Elder and his second wife, Barbara, nee. Stele. The Epitaph originally had numerous component parts. [According to Balthasar Mentz] the family portrait was located beneath a larger panel, depicting the resurrection of the dead as seen in a vision by the prophet Ezekiel. There was also a small panel showing the risen Christ in the finial.

Bartholomäus Vogel the Elder (1504-1569) was a publisher and a bookseller. He was one of Luther’s publishers and from 1534 held the rights to publish the German version of the bible. As a well respected citizen he was repeated elected a town councilor.
