The small picture, showing a family consisting of a married couple and five children - one son and four daughters - kneeling in an enclosed space, is part of an epitaph for Bartholomäus Vogel the Elder and his second wife, Barbara, nee. Stele. The Epitaph originally had numerous component parts.
[According to Balthasar Mentz] the family portrait was located beneath a larger panel, depicting the resurrection of the dead as seen in a vision by the prophet Ezekiel. There was also a small panel showing the risen Christ in the finial.
