Research History / Discussion

The age of the sitter, Bugenhagen, does not correspond with the date of 1543 on the painting, but rather indicates a much later date. In fact this date does not appear to be genuine. However, the beech panel and stylistic features suggest that the portrait may have been completed in Cranach the Younger's workshop.
