The Risen Christ stands on the closed sarcophagus in front of the tomb and stabs the defeated figures of Death and the Devil with the glass shaft of the victory banner. The watchmen lie around the sarcophagus, some have just awoken from their slumber. On a path leading into the background the three Marys can be seen already approaching. Beyond a town and castle are shown against the backdrop of a reddish sky.

The bottom quarter of the composition is occupied by a donor family in prayer. Councillor Johann Leupold kneels at the left side with his six male offsprings, and his widow is shown on the right with the two daughters.

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, dark medium, brush

Type/Ductus:

- animated, detailed and freehand underdrawing; possibly developed in two stages

- thin to somewhat broader lines

- isolated hatching strokes

Function:

- relatively (but in sections only roughly) binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the main contours, define forms therein and describe facial features; isolated representation of volume with hatching strokes, particularly in the faces of the donor family and in some areas of shadow; in these areas the lines generally seem to have been traced or copied

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process; numerous changes (e. g. not all the trees in the background or the small bushes in the foreground were executed in the painted version; the devil is different; the position of the skeleton’s legs was changed.
