The painting depicts a crucifixion in front of an expansive landscape. Christ's loincloth extends out on either side creating artifical arabesque forms and beneath him the duke of Anhalt's family kneels in an attitude of prayer. Joachim Ernst of Anhalt is shown on the left, his two sons Johann Georg I. and Christian I. in front of him. Agnes, duchess of Anhalt, born Countess of Barby, who died in 1559 and to whom her husband dedicated this epitaph is represented on the right. The daughters Anna-Maria, Agnes, Elizabeth and Sybille kneel in front of her.

Beneath the dark cloudy sky, that can be associated with the crucifixion, an expansive landscape extends into the pictorial space. It shows a veduta of Nienburg, which was the Anhalt seat of residence.
