Provenance

In 1587 the Evangelical Parish Church received the valuable altarpiece by a follower of Lucas Cranach the Younger. The donor was count Kaspar von Nostitz. The beautiful painting was saved from the flames in 1944 by the courageous action of the local minister Dr. Alpermann.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- dry, black drawing material, dark chalk

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing

- delicate, fine lines

Function:

- only roughly binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the main contours, and describe essential details and facial features; no representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process; numerous larger changes for example hands, facial features as well as the position of the figures
