These pendant portraits unite the representations of Luther and Melanchthon in old age. Although the reformers face each other they gaze into the far distance. Luther is shown as higher ranking: he is on the heraldic right side occupying more of the pictorial plane and as such towers over Melanchthon.

Both are placed in front of a neutral background and each appears to offer the viewer an open book over a stone balustrade.

  • In Luther's book the text reads: 'God puts people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. God does this to all who believe in Christ, because there is no difference at all: everyone has sinned and is far away from God's saving presence. But by the free gift of God's grace all are put right with him through Christ Jesus, who sets them free.' (Rom 3,22 - 25).
