A frontal view of Venus standing on stony ground against a dark background is represented here. She is wearing a necklace set with pearls and a rough chain. A delicate veil is wrapped around her right arm and is held by her with both hands so that would cover her vulva if it were not transparent. Her son Cupid stands at the left edge with a bow and arrow.

17th century

The original version of this composition was probably the fragment (figure of cupid) now in the Kunsthistorische Museum, Vienna (GG 3530). The earliest record of the fragment in the imperial collection (Kaiserliche Sammlung ) is 1663 - therefore the copy in Weimar must have been painted before 1663 [Klassik Stiftung Weimar, revised 2011]
