Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- initial design possibly executed with a dry drawing material, stylus; subsequently reinforced with a fluid, black medium using a brush

Type/Ductus:

- relatively detailed underdrawing; probably after a pre-existing design

- delicate to somewhat broader lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate the main contours and describe essential details and facial features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made to forms during the painting process; small changes (e. g. the castle in the background, the woman breastfeeding her child (foreground r.)

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- Cranach workshop or copy after Cranach

Comments:

- appears to be a workshop repetition or copy after the motif depicted in PRIVATE_NONE-P263

Support

- the support is probably lime wood, bad wood quality

- the original surface on the reverse was removed and an intermediate layer (board) was inserted

- the reverse exhibits rough tool marks and a black coating; there are two light areas where the bare wood is visible (fibres may have been removed from these zones)
