'On ordinary days, the altar's wings remained closed hiding its large central panel. The weekday panels (outer panels) were deliberately painted in a less elaborate manner than the central panel, with a greatly reduced palette. On festive days, the opening of the altar ceremony was staged with great care. Of the four weekday panels, to this day, only three have survived and each of them depicts a saint.

St Valentine was the bishop of Interamna and the patron saint of epileptics. In the painting his patronage is implied by the man lying on his back at the saint's feet.'
