The panel depicts the Virgin as the Mother of Sorrows as a full-length figure standing on stony ground against a black background. The Virgin faces left and has her eyes lowered in grief. A halo with short rays surrounds her head. Over her dark robe she wears a beige cloak, that covers her head in a similar manner to the white veil with which she dries her eyes from her face.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- dry drawing material, dark chalk (for the initial design); fluid, black medium and brush

Type/Ductus:

- detailed and freehand underdrawing

- delicate, fine lines; thin to broad lines with a brush

- hatching-strokes

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate contours and describe the essential details and the facial features; representation of volume (hatching-strokes)

Deviations:

- minor alterations made during the painting process to clearly define form; small changes (e.g. slight shift in the position of the right foot; the robe is slightly longer)
