A three quarter length portrait of the princess wearing a dress with a heavy gold chain and an ornately trimmed decollete over a white pleated blouse. The laced bodice corresponds with German renaissance fashion, whereas the black of the gown, the padded shoulders, the stiff collar and the high ruff reveal the influence of Spanish fashion that was spreading throughout Europe.

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- probably a fluid dark medium (?), lines applied with a brush over an initial design executed with a stylus (?)

Type/Ductus:

- relatively economic and freehand underdrawing (not always distinguishable from the painted version)

- thin lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final version (where visible); the lines delineate the main contours, define forms therein and describe facial features; no representation of volume with hatching strokes

Deviations:

- few corrections were made to forms during the painting process

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- not possible (but probably workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder)
